Beef season 2 renewal status and everything we know so far (2024)

Unfortunately, Netflix has not announced its plans for the dramedy’s future. In other words, the comedy-drama series has not been renewed as of Sept. 29. While this makes us kind of nervous because it’s been over five months since the first season’s release and we still haven’t heard of a renewal, we’re trying to remain hopeful about a Beef season 2.

The good news is that it doesn’t look like viewing hours are an issue for this series. In just its first month on the streaming platform, the first season managed to pull in 171,750,000 million hours viewed. This is an impressive feat that not many Netflix shows can achieve. Remember, viewing hours play a major part in Netflix’s renewal process. IfBeef season 1’s viewing hours are high enough to Netflix’s standards, this betters the chance of the show being renewed.

Now, let’s talk about critical acclaim. Not only did regular viewers enjoy this series but also the critics. They praised Wong and Yeun’s performances as Amy Lau and Danny Cho while also giving credit to the incredible writing and directing. The show even has an almost perfect Tomatometer Score on Rotten Tomatoes, with its score being 98%.So it looks like we don’t have to worry about the audience response or critical acclaim either.

What about production costs? Unfortunately, it’s unknown how much it cost to make this show. However, the entire first season was shot on location in California and there weren’t really any special effects used so it couldn’t be that expensive to make. If production costs weren’t high, this also could better the chances of a renewal. A show that pulls in tons of viewers and isn’t expensive to make sounds like a show Netflix would be open to renewing. But again, we don’t know the exact production costs.

Although the first season pretty much wrapped the story up in a nice little bow, the show is not billed as a limited series, so it could come back if Netflix gave it another shot. The show’s creator is even down to do another season or two.

Beefcreator Lee Sung Jin spoke with Rolling Stone back in April 2023 and mentioned that he had “a lot of ideas to keep the story going.” He said this about additional installments of the series,

"“I think should we be blessed with a Season Two, there’s a lot of ways for Danny and Amy to continue. I have one really big general idea that I can’t really say yet, but I have three seasons mapped out in my head currently.”"

Jin also revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the show was initially pitched as an anthology series where every season would focus on a new beef with new characters. So, there’s a possibility Jin might choose to go this route if there were to be aBeefseason 2.

We’re keeping our fingers crossed that Netflix sees the potential in this show and renews it for a second season by the end of 2023. We really want to see Danny and Amy return!

What is Beef on Netflix about?

The first season centers around two strangers whose lives intertwine during a road rage incident. Danny Cho (Steven Yeun) is a down-his-luck contractor struggling to make ends meet, while Amy Lau (Ali Wong) is a self-made entrepreneur seemingly living a perfect life with her good-looking husband, precious daughter, and nice house.

But truly, Amy is just as unhappy with life as Danny. When Danny and Amy get into a road rage incident, they just can’t seem to let it go. Their desperate need to get revenge quickly begins to have a negative impact on their personal lives.

Spoilers about the Beef season 1 ending ahead.

The first season ends with Danny and Amy squashing their beef after all that they went through in the season. After hallucinating from poisonous berries and thinking they’re going to die in a forest, Amy and Danny wake up the next morning to find they’re still alive. As they make their way to safety, they run into Amy’s husband George who shoots Danny thinking that Amy is in danger.

The next scene, which is the last scene of the season, shows Danny in a hospital bed seemingly unconscious while Amy watches him. Amy decides to get in bed with Danny and embraces him. Moments later, Danny comes to and begins to move his arm around Amy in what looks like a hug but then the show cuts to the credits.

Since aBeefseason 2 isn’t a go at Netflix, we can only predict who could be in a potential second season. The show’s creator said he would like to work with Ali Wong and Steven Yeun again in a second season, so they could possibly return. Young Mazino, who plays Danny’s younger brother Paul, could also come back since his character and Danny have some things they need to work out.

David Choe, who plays Danny and Paul’s cousin, might not return in aBeefseason 2 because of the disturbing podcast controversy he was involved in.
