The future of BEEF is currently unknown, but creator Lee Sung Jin is very much open to doing a second season.

“I feel like there are so many paths,” the show’s writer-director-producer said in the Emmys press room. “It could stay limited. It was a very close-ended story, for sure. But if Netflix wanted to continue, it could also be anthology. It could be many things. It’s up to the great algorithm. We’re all waiting to hear.”

Lee touched upon a potential Season 2 at the Golden Globes as well. “We always pitched the season to buyers as an anthology series,” he said. “It was always going to be a new beef, new characters. But whether it stays limited or it returns as an anthology or we continue to exist, when they let me know, I’m sure you all will know as well.”

As speculated by our sister pubDeadline, formerBrokeback MountainandLove and Other Drugsco-stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway are in talks to headline Season 2, which would revolve around two feuding couples. Gyllenhaal and Hathaway would portray one of the duos, while Charles Melton (May December) and Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) are being eyed to play their rivals. Netflix declined to confirm the report.

  • How much of BEEF is based on a true story?

Lee was inspired to write BEEF by a real-life road rage incident he experienced with a white SUV in 2019. Though the scene wasn’t nearly as dramatic as Danny and Amy’s furious feud in the series, Lee felt the urge to follow the other car home after being honked and screamed at while sitting at a red light.

“I thought there was something interesting there, how we’re all locked in our subjective world views, and we go around projecting a lot on the other person and not really seeing things for what they are,” he told The New York Times.

Lee elaborated on the incident in another interview with Today. “I was like, ‘I’ll follow you.’ I justified it (as) ‘I’m commuting home and this person happens to be in front of me and if we go in different directions, I wouldn’t follow them.’ But we happened to be going the same direction home, for miles and miles. It was like 30-40 minutes. So I’m sure in his mind, it felt like I was just a wild lunatic stalking him.”

  • How did Season 1 of BEEF end?

In the Season 1 finale of BEEF (read our post mortem with Yeun and Wong here), Danny and Amy once again attempt to run each other off the road, culminating in both vehicles flying straight off a cliff into a remote desert. And if that wasn’t traumatic enough, Danny finds the still-armed Amy and pushes her off a steep embankment, leaving her for dead. But when the sun eventually comes up, they realize that in order to survive their predicament, they must finally work together.

Ultimately, the experience brings them closer in ways they never thought possible. But once they finally make their way back to civilization, Amy’s husband George finds the pair and shoots Danny down before asking any questions.

When the scene cuts, Amy is by Danny’s bedside at the hospital where she relives the last year of her life and the entire beef she had with this man she very much cares about now. She crawls onto the unconscious Danny’s bed to cuddle with the one person she now feels closest to, hoping and wondering if he’ll ever wake up again.
