Mandela today was beginning a five-day stay focused on efforts to win private Investment and business interest in South Africa, where investor concerns about political stability linger. President Clinton, planning announcements on economic assistance later this week, was hosting Mandela today at the White House for a brief preliminary meeting and then at a state dinner. In a United Nations speech Monday, Mandela underscored his country need for economic development now that the apartheid system of racial separation has been dismantled. "As we undertook never to rest until the system of apartheid was defeated, so we now undertake that we cannot rest while millions of our people suffer the pain and indignity of poverty in all its forms," he said.
