Do Shadow Scales/Tissue Samples count as pre boss items? (2024)

It does require you to fight the boss, but it doesn't require you to defeat the boss. And thats what makes it confusing.

I would say because you don't have to defeat it, it is preboss.
At the same time, preboss means before boss, which contradicts my thoughts.

I agree, if defeating the boss fully is required for it to count as defeating the boss, any item dropped from individual segments or minions counts as being obtainable before said boss.

It is technically preboss, and it shocks me that its been that way for this long

Its really dumb that you can still get them this way, especially when its literally worse than Reaver Shark which was patched out a long time ago

I personally consider them pre-boss, but recent updates have made them much more rare to drop from segments/minions that to make anything meaningful out of them before actually killing the boss would be about as much effort as just killing the boss outright.

Personally, I don't see any value in looking at the game through this lens. I think it's a much better use of time to analyze what you need to do to acquire an item (and how difficult those tasks are to accomplish) rather than assigning a vague progression stage to balance it around. For example, you CAN get Demon Scythe before fighting a boss, but that requires killing many demons in hell with weak gear. I think if you're willing to put yourself through that, you deserve the weapon, regardless of whether or not you killed any bosses.

This is mainly for tier systems.

I'd say inter-boss, since it's neither before nor after. It's before you defeat the respective bosses, but after you fight them, therefore obtained

the boss fight.

For a meteor to spawn, but meteorite bars can still be obtained through gold chests that are very close to hell. How that works is that if a gold chest is 250 tiles from the bottom of the world then it can contain common shadow chest loot like inferno potions, restoration potions, and even meteorite bars.
